Even assuming (and there are NO rules that necessitate this) that your DM won't let you reuse the same hiding spot more than once you *still* should be able to move around from cover to cover easily. And you are quite squishy.Īs it stands, unless your DM is very confrontational or very unimaginative, most battlefields should have plenty of cover and objects to hide behind. Which means you are now rooted to the spot for a round and the enemies can target you freely.

I think the point is that if you choose to Aim, you didn't choose to Hide. Its not nearly as abusable as other people make it out to be (or at the very least the abuse cases mean a lot less), and sorcerers could use some of the flexibility in casting back that they lost when "preparing spells" stopped literally meaning you had to assign each spell slot at the end of a long rest. TL DR: As someone who has been running it for a long time, my advice is that its just fine. That's assuming one target obviously but how often do you really get to fireball a group without ALSO fireballing your friendly barbarian/fighter/rogue/paladin/monk (evocation wizard says hello from their perch of actually useful class features)? Either way, now you have to compare that to being able to do it twice baseline to 4 times total in the "abusable" scenario and you start to see why its really a non-issue. Right at level 5, a quickened fireball into a firebolt is still less damage than a fighter or barbarian can pump out if they are optimizing for damage as well and it costs them 7 of their 32 spell points, meaning they can do it a grand total of 4 times in a single day. Even at its most egregious its not THAT good. There is also lots more metamagic thrown around, which is a good thing in my opinion. Six or seven level 3 slots gets you a lot more than three level 3 slots and a bunch of level 1 and 2. Being able to kick up a twinned haste and still throw around a bunch of lightning bolts and fireballs is efficient from a damage perspective. Overall, what we've found to be the much bigger benefit is utilizing mostly level 3 slots. Spells known is a huge limiting factor and eating up any spells known is actually a big deal. Most cantrips nearly keep up with damage of 1st level spells at level 5 and there aren't many that offer utility that is worth the trade off of not casting (or even knowing) a higher level spell. Lower level spells generally kind of suck. Things like the ability to spam low level spells like shield might seem strong on paper, but the prevalence of saving throws and the baseline low AC of Sorcerers means it really doesn't help all that much in the grand scheme of their survivability. It does add some versatility, but in general Sorcerers are STILL slightly weaker than Wizards and Bards thanks to a lack of spells known and a lack of distinguishing class features respectively. If you happen to still be looking for opinions, we have been playing with the houserule that Sorcerers use spell points and combine them with their sorcery points into one pool for 2 years now.
